This year you have a single essay response for this paper. The requirement is that you must get all the achieved bits to get the credit. This will mean you must be able to describe and explain each of the points listed in the specifications.
To get merit or excellence you will need to provide analytical commentary on the points listed below.

This is the Achievement Standard Criteria and terminology you must consider:


1 The relationship between a media product and its target audience includes identification/ measurement of a target audience, use of techniques to make a product appeal to its target audience and the role/influence of other factors in the relationship.
Identification/measurement of a media audience could include Target Audience Grouping System (TAGS) or other audience identification techniques, such as: circulation figures, surveys, television rating systems, focus groups, sampling devices.
Techniques used to make a media product appeal to its target audience could include such things as: content, layout and design, hammocking/scheduling/product placement, pricing, language style, cinematography, marketing/packaging/advertising, music, incentives and promotions.
The role of other factors in the relationship should include one or more of such things as economic considerations, social climate, artistic vision/aesthetics, moral/ethical concerns, cultural considerations, legislative requirements.

2 Media product could include: magazine, newspaper, television programme, radio programme, film, advertisement, feature article, web page.

3 Target audience means the group/sector of society that a media product is primarily intended to reach and appeal to. The target audience should be described in some detail eg gender, age, socio-economic status.

4 Definitions
a Describe means to give a detailed account.
b Explain means to support with reasons and/or justify.
c Analyse goes beyond describing and explaining by carrying the study to wider implications, issues and/or ramifications.

5 Students are expected to use examples to support their responses.

A Possible Question:

Describe, explain and analyse how audience ratings and the advertising dollar affect the programming decisions of a Television Channel. Support your answer with evidence from local "ratings wars."

You will be expected to do the following in response to the rubric:
The examination will take the form of a single essay.
Note the minimal criteria identified in the specifications.
For the purposes of this examination, ‘media product’ means a product created for/in media e.g. TVC, newspaper, radio programme, television show etc.
Candidates must provide at least TWO specific identifying characteristics to describe a target audience for a media product.
Candidates must support their response with specific evidence about at least ONE media product and its target audience.
Candidates must provide specific details of at least ONE technique used to identify/measure the target audience, and at least ONE technique used to appeal to the target audience.
Candidates must analyse why the process of gathering and using information to help creators/broadcasters of media products build a relationship with their target audience is so important.
This analysis could include consideration of one or more of such things as economic considerations, social climate, artistic vision/aesthetics, moral/ethical concerns, cultural considerations, legislative requirements etc.
